When you hear the word Cancer most people immediately think it’s a death sentence, but there are so many new developments in Cancer treatments. Patients are living longer and having a better quality of life. In years past, patients would experience hair loss, nausea, and vomiting no matter what treatments they took. Now, there are many chemotherapy treatments that don’t cause hair loss or even much sickness. Every year there’s more and more research in addition to breakthroughs in treatments and technology.
If you or a family member are diagnosed with cancer don’t give up. Stay in constant communication with your doctor and voice your concerns. If you are interested in clinical trials make sure to communicate that with your oncologist. Find out what new treatments are available for the type of Cancer you have.
Also, stay connected to your support system. This is extremely important for an individual diagnosed with Cancer. If you isolate yourself it will be easier to slide down a slippery slope. Stay around people who will encourage and support you. Share your feelings with others; this can be very helpful in helping you releasing your fears. You don’t have to hold onto all of the feelings you are experiencing. It may even be a good idea to keep a journal. This will allow you to share your feelings without the feeling like you’re being judged.
Support groups are also a great idea for people experiencing Cancer. You are not alone, even if there are times you may feel alone. Joining a support group will give you tips on how others have handled chemotherapy or radiation. The more you hear other people’s stories, the more it will give you the courage and faith you need to keep going.
As advances are being made in oncology, know that there are people working hard to end this terrible disease. I am a nurse who believes in miracles and I think that prayer is really the key people need to survive. Prayer helps give people hope that things can be different for them. The more you feed your soul and spirit with positive energy the more you’ll be in gratitude for every day that you have.
I tell my patients all of the time that you have Cancer but don’t allow Cancer to have you. Stay in control of your life, your desires, and your goals. Make decisions that are best for you and not based off of what others want you to do.
I am sure there are days you want to give up but know there is greater for you. Trust in something greater. Trust in the divine plan even when you don’t understand it.
